Santos Silva said the weekend’s elections were “regrettable” with many irregularities but nothing that was unexpected or that the Venezuelan government has not been warned about”.

Venezuela’s president, Nicolas Maduro, was declared the winner of Sunday’s presidential elections with almost 70% of the votes but only 46% turned out for the widely-recognised fraudulent ballot, meaning he was only elected by about a third of the population.
