“This facility has taken a step forward in its quality and regional attractiveness, both for passenger flights and other logistics and operational functions,” said the mayor of Viseu, Almeida Henriques.
In his opinion, “the annual growth of air traffic testifies to this attractiveness and opens the way to opportunities for local and regional economic and tourist
development.”
The new service is the result “of the installation and overhaul of the runway lighting system, with battery backup in case of power failure.”
The control tower is now also “properly equipped, staffed and certified.”
According to the local authority, “in addition to receiving civil flights, this qualification allows the aerodrome to provide a safe response to Civil Protection emergency missions.”
“As well as this, the aerodrome is enabled for training and instruction of pilots in the component of night flight training,” he added.
Last year, Viseu municipal aerodrome carried out 9,119 flight operations. By 2015, it had carried out 1,537 flight operations and in 2014 just 273.
