151 MPs voted in favour (PSD, Chega, IL and CDS-PP), with 65 against (PS, Livre, PCP, BE, JPP and PAN), out of a total of 216 MPs present, exceeding the required absolute majority threshold (116), which is necessary as this is an organic law.

On 1 April afternoon, the PSD and Chega announced that they had reached an agreement on this bill and another amending the nationality law.

The original decree, approved in October last year by the PSD/CDS-PP, Chega, IL and JPP, was returned to parliament after the Constitutional Court unanimously ruled that several provisions of the bill’s main article were unconstitutional, primarily due to a violation of the principle of equality.

Once the final wording has been agreed, the new text will be sent to Belém, where the President of the Republic, António José Seguro, may promulgate it, veto it or request a fresh review of its constitutionality.
