Latest figures published by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) show that just under 95,000 collisions were reported on Portuguese roads during the first nine months of the year.
This is up by around five thousand on the same period last year and almost ten thousand higher than 2014.
Traffic related deaths have however continued to fall, and is down ten percent on last year for a total of 324.
Serious injuries have also dropped by a similar rate.
Lisbon continued to have the highest number of road related deaths, with 46 - a figure which is up by 30 percent on the same period in 2015.
I am terrified every time I drive in Portugal.....even when slightly over the recommended speed limit our car is being tailgated by another vehicle and within minutes there can be a procession behind us. We are not very slow......we just try and drive carefully....recently I stopped as there was car in front which was also at a halt and a man on the other side of the road at the lights complained that I was blocking the road.....I just wish people here would be more careful on the roads.....please!

Portuguese drivers show, in general, a complete lack of respect to other drivers on road and to traffic regulations: no direction lights, no safe distance and so on. I wish they were more matured and tolerant on the road

Portugal has had the novelty of cars for only a few years and their driving experience is limited to say the least. They even indicate left (if you're lucky) to go straight on at roundabouts. Tailgating is so common, only to be overtaken on a blind bend and then the o/taking vehicle match will your own speed. I've seen a GNR parked, yes parked, in the "fast lane" of a motorway with no lights, hi viz, advanced warning, and the cop was just twizzling his table tennis, green-red, bat in boredom as he "protected" workmen 200 metres in the same lane. Cars and Portugal are not a marriage that works.

Portuguese drivers have no respect, are simply bad & intolerant drivers no matter where in the world they are, S. AFrica, Mozambique, Angola, even in Switzerland where they seem to swarm to. They'll never change, it's their make up.
