The news was reported by Jornal de Notícias, which explains that tariffs will now be calculated on the amount of waste collected, measured in weight units or estimated by volume, applying the user-pays principle.

At issue is a decree-law published in Diário da República, which provides that "from January 1, 2025, tariffs for the commerce, services and catering sector must no longer be indexed to water consumption".

Regarding the other deadline, which concerns families, the following can be read: "From January 1, 2030, tariffs for the domestic sector must no longer be indexed to water consumption".

JN says that the change in the invoice will take place on January 1st of next year, when the waste tariff will no longer be indexed to water, which could mean big savings for some businesses, such as laundries.
