Austrian Airlines will increase its operation to Porto from May, with five flights a week between Vienna, the Austrian capital, and the city of Porto, Thomas Ahlers, General Manager Sales of the Lufthansa Group in Portugal, told Publituris.

"We decided to practically double the capacity in May 2024, from three flights a week to five flights a week," he said, explaining that Austrian Airlines resumed the route to Porto in the summer of 2023, after an absence of almost 20 years.

According to Thomas Ahlers, Austrian Airlines' new route to Porto was a great success in the summer of last year, which is why the Lufthansa Group decided to increase the number of weekly flights to almost double this summer.

"This new flight was the most successful of all the new Austrian Airlines flights," added the head of the Lufthansa Group in Portugal, pointing out that, in addition to the Austrian airline, the group's airlines are making a positive assessment of their operations in Portugal last year.

According to Thomas Ahlers, "the Lufthansa Group airline in Portugal had a successful 2023, with growth in passengers and revenue compared to the previous year of 2022".

"We also saw very high seat occupancy rates, which means that the flights were very well booked," he said, revealing that last summer the Lufthansa Group companies offered up to 36 flights a day in Portugal to the various hubs they serve.

Thomas Ahlers was also pleased that, with the arrival of Austrian Airlines in Porto, all the group's airlines now serve the Portuguese market "from all the Lufthansa Group's hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna and Brussels".

It should be noted that in the summer of IATA 2023, Austrian Airlines resumed the route it had abandoned for more than 20 years, linking Porto to Vienna, in a route with three flights a week and which was one of the seven new routes opened by the Lufthansa Group in the high season last year.
