He has said that he would run as an independent in the elections.

Additionally a barrister, Mr. McNamara was elected in 2011 to the Labour Party's TD seat in the Clare constituency; however, he lost his position in 2016.

In 2020, he was elected again as an Independent. During the epidemic, the Clare TD presided over the Dáil Covid-19 committee.
