“The work is underway (…), the contractor managed to bring the delivery forward by about a month. Therefore, it is possible, almost certain, that we will still be able to have this connection between the city centre and the eastern part of the city available in the next two months”, revealed the person responsible for the Lisbon Mobility and Parking Company (EMEL), during a hearing at the Lisbon Municipal Assembly.
According to Carlos Silva, the value of the investment made in this pedestrian-cycle bridge was 3.5 million euros up to “the point it is at today”.
The person responsible for the work must deliver the contract at the end of this month, he added.
The bridge, next to Rotunda do Relógio, is a project by the Lisbon City Council in the area of green spaces presented in 2021, but which only began in January 2024.
“It is a naturalised pedestrian-cycle bridge, more than a bridge, it is also a garden”, stated Carlos Silva, explaining that EMEL limited itself to monitoring the project at the time of its execution and launched the competition for the project.
According to EMEL, the new bridge will connect the green spaces in the area, establishing continuity between the Central, Olivais and Oriental green corridors.
There will also be a direct cycle-pedestrian link between the José Gomes Ferreira Park (Mata de Alvalade), the Vinha Park and the Bela Vista Park.
The naturalized overpass will be 104.8 metres long and incorporates a strip with plant treatment over the structure of the viaduct in the extension of the adjacent green areas, added EMEL.
At the start of the work, in January 2024, EMEL expected its completion by the end of 2024 and an investment value of approximately €2.5 million.
