According to data from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), analysed by Notícias ao Minuto, between June 15 and 21, the highest maximum temperature was recorded on the 17th, Tuesday.
On this day, the Alvega station, in the municipality of Abrantes, recorded 42.3 degrees.
On the same day, six other stations recorded maximum temperatures above 40 degrees: Pinhão, Santa Bárbara (41.9 degrees), Zebreira (41), Mora (40.9), Lousã (Aeródromo) (40.7), Mortágua/Aeródromo (CIM) (40.5) and Avis, Benavila (40.2).
It is worth noting that, on other days, several locations exceeded 40 degrees, but none reached 42.
Temperatures have been gradually falling in recent days and, although summer has already begun, the IPMA predicts that the last week of June will begin with showers and thunderstorms in mainland Portugal, at least until Thursday, when temperatures are expected to rise again.
According to the IPMA, between the 23rd and 25th of June, "showers are expected to occur on the mainland, most likely in the North and Centre regions". These showers, it should be noted, "may be accompanied by thunderstorms".
During these days, "the maximum temperature will generally vary between 23 and 34 degrees, being higher in the interior and in the South region". The minimum temperature will vary between 13 and 18 degrees.
As of Thursday, "no precipitation is expected and there will be a rise in temperatures, which could exceed 40 degrees again in Alentejo and in the interior North and Center in the following days".
