Nurses at the Portimão Hospital will be staying away or involved in protests until this coming Friday and have been followed by their colleagues in Lagos.

On Monday, unions estimated that 86 percent of nurses in Portimão took part in the strike, while just over 50 percent did so in Lagos.

The action is being held as nurses are demanding that their working weeks are reduced to 35 hours, in line with other civil servants.

But due to a lack of resources, the government has so far only applied the cut in hours to state departments where available human resources can cope with workers clocking out an hour earlier.
