The ‘March for Abolition’ protest is being organised by the City of Albufeira Anti-Bullfights group and will start at 6.30pm at the Fisherman’s beach before marching towards the city’s bullring.
A spokesperson for the group said three women have “volunteered to strip down to their bikinis, and lay on bloodied sheets with fake spears on them as they have done in Spain”, in what was allegedly a widely-publicised event.
On its Cidade de Albufeira Anti-Tourada Facebook page the group said: “Let’s say enough! Torture is not culture, and it is not our tourism card! Enough of seeing deceived tourists saying that they will not return! Enough of public money to finance this bloody industry! Enough of cruelty toward living beings!”
Around 50 people have confirmed their presence at the march.
The City of Albufeira Anti-Bullfights group was set up by “a group of individual citizens who fight for the welfare of animals and to end this barbaric practice.”
It was created “because the city of Albufeira still has the deplorable ‘ring of torture to animals’ and therefore presents a sad and heinous calling card to the tourists who visit.”
The group’s members vow to “fight for the ring to be closed.”
A bullfight was staged at the ring on Thursday.
