Marítimo, after a poor start to the season, have shown a marked improvement under the guidance of Daniel Ramos who was appointed towards the end of September.
The islanders took an early lead through their Armenian midfielder Gevorg Ghazaryan and only a fine double save by Ederson prevented the hosts from adding to their lead.
The Eagles drew level when Semedo’s shot deflected off the heel of Gonçalo Guedes to leave Marítimo goalkeeper Gottardi stranded as the ball crept into the corner of the net.
Benfica were now on top and dominated proceedings without turning their superiority into goals.
Opportunities went begging and Marítimo keeper Gottardi was in stunning form to prevent the league leaders from taking the lead. In the end, it was the home side who completed a major upset when centre-back Maurício headed home from a corner to record a 2-1 victory for the Madeira team.
Sporting put in one of their best performances of the season to overcome Vitória de Setúbal.
After just six minutes, William Carvalho headed home from a pinpoint Gelson Martins cross. Shortly before the interval Bruno César added a second when he smashed a spectacular angled free-kick, from a tight angle, into the top corner.
Sporting had another goal – this time by Coates – dubiously ruled out in the second-half, but will go into Sunday’s derby, against Benfica at the Stadium of light, in confident mood.
FC Porto had failed to score in their previous four games as they entertained SC Braga and although overwhelming their opponents they once again failed to find the back of the net.
An André Silva penalty was saved, Diogo Jota headed over an open goal, Danilo hit the post and Braga goalkeeper Marafona showed why he is now being called up to Portugal’s senior squad with a series of highly impressive saves.
Just when it seemed certain FC Porto were set to record their fifth successive 0-0 draw, 18-year-old substitute Rui Pedro burst through to score the only goal of the game deep into stoppage time.
