Associations in favour say a new law will represent the current diversity of Portuguese society and not one based on a single origin or particular skin colour.
A petition, backed by groups such as SOS Racism and Portugal’s Black Consciousness movement, is currently circulating in a bid to force Parliament to debate the matter.
Wait a minute. So if someone is born in Portugal to foreign parents, that person doesn't automatically become a Portuguese citizen? So I assume they become citizens of the same country their parents are from? Wow! If this is true, we've been doing it all wrong here in the States! Illegal immigrants who have children here, those children automatically become US citizens. We call them anchor babies.
