The authority "intends to ask the European Commission to remit the Altice case [to it] because it considers that it is in a better position to analyse the case", the official explained.

Altice is to buy PT Portugal, which includes the MEO and Sapo telephone and internet services, among others, for €7.4 billion after the shareholders of PT SGPS, the Portuguese holding company that is the largest shareholder of Oí of Brazil, which owns PT Portugal, approved the deal last month.

The Portuguese authority sees itself as having "a history of analysis in the [telecoms] sector" in Portugal, the official said.
