In a debate requested by the PSD on removing Jersey, the Isle of Man and Uruguay from a list of territories with more favourable taxation, the Portuguese tax secretary, Fernando Rocha Andrade, said “no opinion from the Tax Authority was needed to approve the decision contrary to what various MPs had insinuated and stated”.
The PSD deputy whip António Leitão Amaro accused the government of conducting a “tax blackout” that not only removed the territories from the list, but even reduced their taxation rates in Portugal.
Despite the explanations from Rocha Andrade, Leitão Amaro reiterated his arguments adding that “a political decision cannot be (allowed to be) illegal”.
