Among the goods gathered were clothes, educational material, furniture and white goods.
The campaign was a joint effort carried out by the Cape Verde Embassy and the Union of Portuguese-Speaking Capital Cities as well as Faro Council, which offered up its Civil Protection headquarters to store donated items.
“Thus the Council is enhancing the sense of solidarity expressed by hundreds of individuals, businesses and local institutions to support the population affected by the volcanic eruption on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde, in November 2014”, it said in a statement, adding: “We recall that from the outset Faro showed its availability to work together in supporting the Cape Verdean populations affected by this natural disaster.”
The city of Faro is twinned with the city of Praia, Cape Verde’s capital and largest city, on the island of Santiago, since 1997.
The items will be taken to Fogo Island via the Cape Verde Embassy in Portugal and the Cape Verde Red Cross.
In November last year Fogo Island’s Pico do Fogo volcano began erupting, one of the most powerful eruptions in recent history, destroying two villages and forcing the evacuation of 1,500 people, Cape Verde officials said.
