Last season, Jonas was Benfica’s star performer and picked up the ‘Top Goalscorer’ and ‘Best Player’ awards in the Primeira Liga.
This campaign injury has dogged the 32-year-old Brazilian international who has made just seven appearances, but last weekend his two first-half goals helped settle the Eagles nerves against Nacional.
Mitroglou added a third ten minutes from time to leave the Madeira outfit floundering at the bottom of the table after Tondela moved above them with a goalless draw at Belenenses.
Benfica will be hoping that Jonas is in top form on Valentine’s Night as they entertain Borussia Dortmund at the Estádio da Luz in the Champions League round of sixteen.
FC Porto fielded new signing Tiquinho Soares for the battle with third-placed Sporting Lisbon.
Tiquinho arrived from Vitória Guimarães, having scored seven goals in sixteen appearances for his former club, and instantly became a crowd favourite when he scored after just five minutes.
The goal started from a huge throw from keeper Iker Casillas to start a counter attack.
Jesús Corona got past Marvin Zeegelaar all too easily to cross for Tiquinho, who escaped João Palhinha’s attempt at marking him to start his Porto career off in style.
Tiquinho’s second came five minutes before the interval when a clinical pass through the middle by Danilo Pereira picked out the Brazilian forward who made no mistake to double Porto’s lead.
At the break, Sporting replaced the ineffectual Matheus Pereira with Alan Ruiz and the visitors were a different side. Bryan Ruiz forced the first real save from Iker Casillas before, minutes later, Adrien Silva rattled the top of the Porto crossbar.
Sporting pulled a goal back through substitute Alan Ruiz as Bas Dost headed down for the Argentinean to fire home.
Eight minutes from time Iker Casillas made a brilliant save to deny Coates heading in the equaliser from a free-kick but Casillas’ finest moment came in the very last minute when a Sporting corner found the towering head of Sebastián Coates.
The Spanish international keeper pulled off one of the saves of the season as he tipped the ball around the post.
The result virtually ends Sporting’s disappointing season as they now languish nine points behind second place Porto.
