The alarm was raised at around 6.30pm and an hour later smoke from the fire was visible from kilometres away.
Some 28 fire-fighters were at the scene to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the landfill and into the countryside surrounding it.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished last night.
