The hardest hit region was Leiria, with 20,348 hectares, about 16% of the total.

The Leiria region was affected by the great fires at Pedrógão Grande, where more than 60 people lost their lives and 20,072 hectares of forest was burnt down.

Almost 79% of mainland Portugal was in severe or extreme drought in July, the weather agency said recently.
