The operation was centred in the northern city of Valongo and saw drivers see their cars towed away if they were found to have any outstanding debts to the taxman.

According to the State Secretary of Tax Affairs, the operation was immediately called off when it was brought to his attention, terming the action disproportionate and said there were other means available with which to collect tax debts
