ZERO said 99 percent of water that reached Portuguese homes was safe but pointed out that there were problems relating to efficiency.
According to the association, water supply which is not invoiced, such as illegal use or losses due to leaks or bad use, comes to 30 percent of the total amount, estimated in actual losses of around 180 million cubic metres per year.
As for bathing areas, the association said that halfway through the bathing season this year, around six percent of beaches had prohibited or advised against bathing, out of a total 608 of bathing areas.
