In total, 12 regions across southern Portugal and inland areas are on very high alert, with remaining 9 regions on level lower.

Most regions are on a level 8 alert, with the highest being 11.

The Portuguese Met Office has cautioned that people should wear sunglasses, a hat, t-shirts and use sun cream should they intend spending any time in the sun.

Parents are asked to limit the time their children are outdoors during peak times, which are generally from 12 to 4pm.
