The association behind the ‘Cacifos Solidários’ scheme that also includes managing the project and accompanying the people on the streets, hopes first to expand to the capital of the island of Madeira, Funchal, said its chairman, Duarte Paiva, as he inaugurated 12 new lockers in the chic Parque das Nações district of Lisbon.
The lockers project began in October 2013 with 12 lockers in a poorer part of the city where the homeless could “store their belongings in a safe, dignified way, while they were also accompanied by a professional team, who established a link between the street and the social services”.
There are currently 48 such lockers in four different parts of Lisbon.
