“The emigration of Portuguese citizens increased with the recession, namely after 2010.
The number of long-term emigrants was estimated to be 52,000 in 2012 and 53,800 in 2013, compared with 23,700 in 2010", the study, which was released in Paris today, said.
The document also noted that “the total number of emigrants (short- and long-term) was 128,100 in 2013, 96 percent of whom were Portuguese and just four percent foreigners”.
In other words, 122,980 Portuguese nationals left the country along with 5,120 foreigners that year.
“Although the proportion is increasing, women only account for a third of all emigrants”, the document said, adding that “the number of qualified emigrants is increasing, especially those going to the UK and Norway”.
