“We have the oldest alliance in the world with the United Kingdom and it will carry on long after what will be the departure of the UK from the European Union”, the Prime Minister told reporters.
António Costa added that Portugal “will do everything to ensure all the rights of the Portuguese community in the UK” are guaranteed, along with “all the rights of the British citizens who live, visit or invest in Portugal.”
The Prime Minister also called on the remaining 27 EU member states to reflect on what these “results mean and the need for us to respond to the concerns of Europe’s citizens.”
My Prime Minister why don't Portugal do the same? Ask people what they want. Many of us do not support this authocatic neoliberal, capitalist Europe, run by Germans.

Wise words, as the vote were all about ridding the immoral "cabal" that have enslaved millions, we did not want this anymore. Yes I hope Britain and Portugal will continue the "oldest alliance" and remain friends, yes I voted out for the above reason, myself and Family will be in the Algarve next month, to visit your beautiful country, we have done so for many years now, and God willing will continue to do so. Europe yes E.U. no.

Thank you very much PM Costa. We are not all Little Englanders and if 16 year olds and expats had the vote the result would probably been very different. Many want to be in a reformed EU, I hope Junker & Co listen so that others are not robbed of EU citizenship.

The EU was and is a fantastic idea the problem is with the management, Junker talks to the countries like they are naughty children that will be disciplined if they don't do as they are told. It has felt at times Like EU the dictator. The UK should never have voted out as the only real way of changing things is from within. The people running the EU are acting like the people that ran FIFA and we all know what they were up to. Maybe it's a damb good time for an EU administration audit, who's being paid for what and how much?

Well done Sir, wise words. I love Portugal and the people but I Also love my country, England and the UK. It was time to leave the E. I hope Portugal can find improvements in or out of the EU

Don't be sad. Portugal was our friend for hundreds of years before the EU existed, and will hopefully continue to be so for hundreds of years to come.
The EU was a bad fit for the UK, and we should look at brexit as an opportunity to enhance our friendships by removing a discomfort, not as a threat.

Yes Portugal are our oldest Allies. However I voted remain but I am beginning to think that we could never reform Europe and. I agree that it is a Neo liberal autocratic system with a currency of Euro that is destined to fail. The Germans and French are determined to continue with the project but unfortunately it will ultimately fail. What is needed are free trade agreement amongst the principal partcipants France, Germany GreatBritain +. Countries with similar economies. A trading block syfficiently large enough to interest USA, China etc + emerging markets like India. Europe should be open for business and less Autocratic in its imposed petty regulation. However some should be kept inc Human rights
