Data from the Directorate-General of Probation and Prison Services (DGRSP) shows that on 15 October there were 13,501 inmates in Portugal’s prisons, down 2% from the end of 2016. Of the total, 12,639 were men.

The occupancy rate in prisons was 106.4%, with overcrowding worse in medium-sized institutions.

According to the DGRSP, 84.3% of inmates on 15 October were serving sentences while the rest are being held on remand.

Of all inmates, 16% are foreign nationals.
