Mr. No Ears is a pure white cat with one eye and no ears, born five years ago on the cliffs of Old Town Albufeira, overlooking Praia do Peneco.
Since his birth, he and the other cats in his colony have been looked after by the Amigos dos Gatos do Algarve association, which feeds them and keeps their health in check.
The colony has a designated carer and all the cats that comprise it are neutered, meaning it fulfils the necessary legal requisites for being – and is – officially registered by the municipal vet.
In time Mr. No Ears became something of a local celebrity thanks to his unusual features, having lost an eye to cat flu and having had both ears removed due to solar dermatitis, a type of sunburn that pure white cats are particularly susceptible to.
Despite his odd looks the cat has amassed an army of adoring followers.
A Facebook page set up in his name to raise awareness and educate people about his condition as well as promoting public understanding of feral and street cats has garnered over 21,000 followers in 45 different countries, many of whom make a point of visiting the animal when in the Algarve.
So famous, in fact, has the cat become that a petition has been drawn up and signed by more than 2,000 people to have a plaque dedicated to him put up in Albufeira.
But ten days ago Mr. No Ears was removed from his colony in the dead of night and, allegedly, taken to a new location in the north of the country.
This has incensed those who knew and cared for him, who argue he was well looked after and happy among his cliff-top family.
“Everybody is devastated and absolutely astonished that anyone would take a street cat that was being looked after when there are so many stray cats in every other city and town in the country” said a spokesperson for the association Amigos dos Gatos do Algarve (AGA), which set up the Mr. No Ears Facebook page and oversee the care of his colony.
Since then thousands of concerned observers have posted calls on social media for the cat to be returned.
A Mr. No Ears Facebook follower from across the Atlantic said: “Many of us here in the US are heartbroken and want to see this baby returned”, while another added: “Get Mr. No Ears back where he belongs and is happy. He wants to be in his home with his true family.”
AGA has appealed for the animal’s return and said everything is being done “to resolve the matter peacefully and in the interests of Mr No Ears.”
While reluctant to disclose further details about the situation, the AGA spokesperson confirmed legal action will be taken and charges made.
Founded in 2000 by a British ex-pat, the donation-funded AGA aims to “relieve the suffering of feral and stray cats in the Algarve, Portugal, through effective neutering and feeding programmes and to educate the public in the care and welfare of cats.”

This is disgraceful, why move a cat that is happy where he is. The question is, is he still alive, if he is he needs to be brought back to his surroundings that he is used to

I am hoping that the persons responsible for taking Mr. No Ears will do the right thing and peacefully return him to his cat family, where he belongs. Sooner rather than later. This has gone on for far too long.
Anyone who knows cats well, see that they get depressed when trauma happens and this situation will be traumatic for Mr. No Ears.

for someone to come all the way from the north to steal a cat their intention must be to make money out of a cat so famous

Where is the Justice, taking this lovely loved cat that is clearly in everyone's heart.
Yet no Justice is done about the horrible evil man Antonio Felix. ??????

I am very concerned for Mr. No Ears wellbeing. It makes no sense for a person to take a cat that was not in need of saving from the only home he has known. Furthermore, the people who took him are trying to raise money for medical treatments that Mr. No Ears does not need or require. The money appears to be going in a private bank account, the same bank account they are using to raise money for another allegedly sick cat and the one used for a cat who has since died. What is that all about? And is Mr. No Ears actually better off being trapped in a room with 15 other cats in his abductors home rather than being with his mother and siblings on the shores and cliffs of Albuferia? #brimgMNEhome

I manage the Facebook pages for both Mr No Ears and Amigos dos Gatos do Algarve. I am devastated that two opportunists who saw Mr No Ears as a 'cash cow' have abducted (yes I use the word abducted because that is what this is) our Mr No Ears from his colony. What a terrible thing to do. Mr No Ears. I am so sorry this has happened.

There's only one IMPORTANT thing that you don't mention: MR NO EARS HAS CANCER! The person who took him is taking care of him! His ear holes were wounded, he need radiotherapy. WHY DID HIS CARERS DIDN'T PROVIDE THE NEEDED CARES? WHY ARE YOU COVERING THID UP? AFRAID OF LOSING THE DONATIONS?
He's in good hands, he's loved, he's being cared!

have been so upset since I heard this ten days ago, not upset for myself, very upset for Mr. No Ears. The stress, emotionally and physically this cat will be experiencing being indoors, away from his colony, his colony brothers, sisters, his carers, his daily visitors and his familiar trusted home is extremely detrimental to his health. Feral/Street Cats confined to closed quarters suffer terribly. It can be compared to taking a human who suffers from Agoraphobia (one who is in fear of public places and open spaces) and putting them in the middle of the town square. Some people may not know, and have never seen a feral cat put indoors. The cat panics, jumping up walls, running around in circles, panting, heart racing, banging into walls and anything in their way in a true state of sheer panic. If all cats were born inside with the help of humans, there would be no feral/street cats. This is not the case. The reality is the cats born outside, only survive by big hearted humans that work and fight for these cats. Lesley Normington and her team, Amigos dos Gatos do Algarve association keep these cats alive and well. Mr. No Ears, was saved by AGA, and is so loved by so many, in turn Mr. No Ears has saved many more cats due to being so famous. On a visit to the Algarve from Canada, I found an unaltered male, in real trouble with very infected ears, in terrible pain. One call to Lesley
Normington, of AGA without hesitation the cat was into their vet and the cat was healed and sterilized. I will be returning to the Algarve in March 2016, with hope that the cat-nappers become heroes and return Mr. No Ears to his home, so he can live out his life where he is happy. Please let yourself do the right thing for Mr. No Ears and bring him on home. Tracy Hutton, from The Cat Rescue Network in Ottawa Canada. XOXOXO to all fighting for him.

Ever since I learned about Mr. No Ears and his colony, I've been thinking about coming to visit, as lots of his fans do. He's a legitimate tourist attraction in his home town. Feral cats do not do well in captivity, and in the pictures posted of him by his captors, he looks drugged. When vets are describing him as in excellent health, there's no reason for penning him up to force treatment on him. Cats love their homes, and they love the other cats who share their homes with them- bring him back to his family!
By Jocelyn Martin from USA on 25 Sep 2015, 13:38
Such a heartbreaking story, and a story that should never even have happened.
Mr No Ears has a lovely feline family and wonderful caregivers (AGA) in Albufeira and was senselessly taken for unscrupulous reasons. Feral cats should not be forced to live indoors against their will.
Mr No Ears needs to be home in his beach area with the family (both feline and AGA humans) that he has known all his life.
The world is watching and hoping for his safe return... soon.
By Emily Martinez (Toronto, Canada) from Other on 25 Sep 2015, 14:10
Mr. No Ears needs to be returned to his family and colony in Albufeira. He is NOT an indoor cat and most likely is traumatized by his captivity. This was a despicable deed to steal a defenseless cat from his home and carers - please Portugal News, stay on top of this story until Mr. No Ears is returned!
By Andrea from USA on 25 Sep 2015, 14:37
This is a very sad situation. There is a comment on here by Angela Loura asking why Mr wasn't provided the care he needs for his cancer, he was being cared for for his condition. Even their own vet says that Mr No Ears is in very good health with some signs of mild carcinoma. No mention of the supposed bone cancer the abductors claim he has. And AGA explained the build up in his ears and the fact that his last biopsy came back negative and that he was coming due for his vet check and that many of his treatment were going to be done at that time.
Please show us that Mr No Ears is still alive.
By Shelly Hoernicke from Other on 25 Sep 2015, 16:38
Mr No Ears - Sr. Sem Orelhas deserves the best and being in the Portuguese Newspaper is certainly cool...................... but what he deserves the most is to be back in Albufeira with his colony of cats, who are so well looked after by AGA and loved by so many locals and tourists. We can only but hope that this will be another step in making the captors to realize how special he is and have the heart to handle him back to his birth place! <3 <3 <3 <3

Bring Mr. No Ears back to Albufeira. The Catnip Times is calling upon those who took him to bring him back, safe and sound.
By The Catnip Times from USA on 25 Sep 2015, 17:53
I read the vet report posted online. No place it says cat need radiotherapy. No even confirm cancer, just says compatable with cancer, but tests need be made to confirm. How can people say cat has cancer if vet report not say cancer???

Please return him to his family. This is terrible. News

This cat has been stolen. Where are the Portuguese police? I am sure most Portuguese people are as keen on animals as the rest of the world, so why has nothing been done? This is really bad for the reputation of your country.
(And Angela Loura, he did have cancer and was treated, he does not have cancer now).
By brambly from UK on 25 Sep 2015, 20:08
The cat had cancer!!! He was not well, Why you don t mentionned that? White cat s can t live on streets. So many discussions about the cat when there are others in danger too!
By Jerks from Algarve on 25 Sep 2015, 20:09
Angela Loura, You know nothing! Even the vet report from the abductors' vet says within it NO sign of cancer. And he HAS been cared for by a vet all these years and given medications when needed. He needs to be returned to his family and his proper caregivers!
By catherine from USA on 25 Sep 2015, 20:36
Hi , just a question, if mr no ears is so happy, so well looked after , why does he have no ears ??? and why he is blind??? from a cat lover .......
By Manuela Silva from Algarve on 25 Sep 2015, 22:07
Take Mr. No Ears back to his fur family, his home and his caregivers. Please. You took him from everything he knew. That is cruel. Please. Give him back.

It has been 5 days now since a photo of Mr No Ears has been released to the public by his abductors. All photos they have shown of him since he has been held captive in one small room with 15 other cats, have shown him 'not moving, head down, eyes closed'. This is a semi-feral cat, the only way he would be like that is if he is drugged.... so we are very concerned for his welfare. We are asking please, show us that he is well - as we fear the worst.
By Caroline Lee Ferreira from UK on 26 Sep 2015, 07:10
I visited the colony shortly after the kidnap and it's obvious the cats are well cared for ferals. The people who stole him have no compassion, he must be really stressed if he is kept indoors after enjoying a full life in the outdoors. They call themselves animal lovers but if they truely were they would return him, or at least contact his carers to come and collect him. In the meantime, the remaining cats still need support too, let's make sure they get it.
By Liz West from UK on 26 Sep 2015, 07:26
Bring Mr. No Ears home to Albufeira! We won't rest until he is back with his colony!
By Breanne Bennett from Other on 26 Sep 2015, 08:19
Poor guy, minding his own business with his family and gets stolen by someone unknown to him. Then he's forced to live in captivity and drugged. A truly heartbreaking story. Kudos to the Catnip Times and Portugal News for giving this story the attention it deserves. Many, many people will not give up on Mr No Ears until he is home with his cat colony.

Thank you for reporting about our loved and missed Mr NoEars. I am praying every day, that this bad person will give him back to his colonie, there he belongs.
I can not understand, what kind people that are, who do so, it is horrible, and I do much sorrows about the healthness of Mr.NoEars, when he stays prisoned. From Germany

Why would a person travel so far to take a cat from his home?Just for the well-being of the cat? I don't think so,I think they saw a chance to make money from the cat.My fear is now with the negative publicity they may kill the cat rather than face questions about his health.
By roland from Other on 04 Oct 2015, 23:10
Whoever took him needs help! What makes you think you could love him anymore than those who loved and cared for him? You are putting so much stress on him right now! He misses his family and they miss him. He was HAPPY! Visitors came to love him and bring him ham from around the world. Please return him to the life he loves. If you loved him you would return him. Please, for the love of God, return His Mr. No Ears.

Today I met Mr No Ears' family for the first time. They are a well loved, well cared for happy colony of cats who are living their lives where they want to be. Their human carers are dedicated in their desire to provide for their needs which includes both food and medical care for them 365/366 days of the year. To think that somebody could be so unscrupulous as to take one of these cats without even consulting their carers is abhorrent. Each one is known to them which includes their needs. Depriving Mr No Ears of his freedom, care and love and keeping him confined to a house containing a large number of sick cats will do nothing to enhance his health or theirs. He needs to be returned to his home, the only home he has known. Those that have him should feel ashamed of their actions and do what the judge has suggested and return him to the place where he was taken from. If they are true in their desire to help unwanted or sick cats there are many in Portugal craving the responsible dedication given by this Charity. Mr No Ears must be returned to his home.

As a twice yearly visitor to Albufeira since 2009, I have known Mr No Ears well and spent time with him. I also know the wonderful care given to him by Amigos Gatos. Abducting him from his carers and known home environment would have caused him suffering and stress, which is blatant animal cruelty.
I understand the abductors tried to obtain money via social media for alleged treatment for Mr No Ears, stating his cancer had spread to the bone. This was extortion and a lie. I last saw Mr No Ears in June of the year of his abduction and he was perfectly healthy - his ear tips had long since healed. Yet on the social media Martins and Baptista’s requests for money his ears had been bloodied by this couple and his head scratched. I also know that two years previously, due to a wound on his neck, Mr No Ears had a biopsy at the veterinary of Amigos Gatos and he had no cancer cells at all.
I feel therefore this couple should be made an example of as they are dangerous and could do this again to other animals - even to people’s pets.
I feel they are guilty of
Abduction
Severe animal cruelty
Making illegal requests for money on social media
The possible death of an animal who was not ill and belonged to someone else
