"I am satisfied with that which I felt and heard on behalf of Chancellor Angela Merkel and therefore I think the visit was worthwhile, very worthwhile. And it was also worth verifying that the chancellor accompanies and accompanies very well what happens in Portugal. She understands very well what happens in Portugal," the president told journalists.

The president refused to directly comment on whether he had secured any kind of position from Germany over possible Eurozone sanctions against Portugal for running excessive budget deficits but did say that he felt his talks had gone “better than might have been expected."

"I leave here with the notion that there is a very clear understanding as to what is happening in Portugal and that sensation was strengthened following the conversations” held said Rebelo de Sousa at the end of his official visit to Germany.
