The initiative was to celebrate the birthday of South Africa’s first democratically elected leader and to honour values such as justice, solidarity and equality.


The Portuguese capital was one of dozens of cities across the world to celebrate Mandela Day, with major structures such as the 25 April and Vasco da Gama bridges forming part of the initiative which is aptly also aimed at building bridges.


The celebration in Lisbon was overseen by young volunteers operating under the Cape Town-based Ubuntu Academy.
