"Mr Barroso has done the Eurosceptics a huge favour. I therefore solemnly appeal that he abandons this post", Harlem Désir told French MPs, referring to the former European Commission president’s job as non-executive chairman of Goldman Sachs following the UK’s decision to leave Europe.

The French politician said that the job offer “is particularly scandalous taking into consideration the Ban k’s role during the 2008n financial crisis and its help in camouflaging the Greek government’s public accounts ".

Harlem Désir said that "morally, politically, ethically, it is a failure by Mr Barroso" adding that this “is the worst service that a former president of a European institution could give to the European project at a moment in history when what it needs is to be sustained, maintained and bolstered".

US bank Goldman Sachs announced last week it had hired Durão Barroso as non-executive chairman at a time when the financial sector was reeling with doubts about Great Britain’s exit from the European Union.

Durão Barroso did not brake any rule, since18 months after leaving their posts no former commission members have to answer to the institution.
