Newspaper Correio da Manhã reported that the Canadian couple, who are in their 70s, were set upon by the attackers as they walked along Rua Coronel Águas near the old cemetery at around 11am.
The trio made off with wallets and other valuables that the couple had on them. GNR police were called to the scene and a short while later managed to intercept one of the attackers. The case has been handed over to the PJ police to investigate.
