Portugal thus leaves behind its unwanted status as the only Western European state with levels of tuberculosis above that rate.


Meanwhile, the General Directorate highlighted that the districts of Porto and Lisbon continue to return incidences above the national average and hence “the campaign against tuberculosis could not waver”.


Correspondingly, the aforementioned 1,940 new cases of the disease and with the estimated resident population of Portugal standing at 10,397,315 inhabitants, that reflects a rate of 18.7 per 100,000 inhabitants.


Hence, the General Directorate stated that getting this disease below this red line “represents an achievement that takes on particular relevance”.
