Osteopathic treatment is performed only using hands with mainly structural and functional Osteopathic techniques, also cranial and visceral Osteopathic techniques combined with Rehabilitation interventions involving motor control exercises, sensoryand sensorimotor training plus pain education from neuroscience research. Thisapproach is essential for patients suffering from chronic pain. Recent epidemiologic studies conclude that in the UK 43% of the population suffer from some type of chronic pain(nearly 28 million adults) while in Portugal more than 30% of the population suffer from chronic pain with an annual cost of 4316 million euros.
Research mentions that multidiscip-linary approach is the best solution for chronic pain and during my clinic experience involving Osteopathic treatment with rehabilitation and pain education better outcomes are reached.
Knowing what research has mentioned, in the future, Vilamoura Osteopathic Centre has an ambition to form partnerships with other health professionals like physicians, nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychotherapists, personal trainers and podiatrists, because our main goal is not our financial income but the Health of our patients.
Finally, reinforcing what was mentioned, my PhD thesis is about chronic pain assessment and how is the body image of the painful areas in these patients directing the development of new treatment approaches and the dissemination of the different modalities in pain assessment.
