This is the day with the highest number of daily deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, surpassing the record set on Monday when data showed 122 deaths.

According to epidemiologist Manuel Carmo Gomes, a researcher at the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon, forecasts pointed to 154 daily deaths on 24 January, a figure that has now been exceeded.

The DGS epidemiological bulletin also indicates that 4,043 people are hospitalised, 60 more than on Monday, of which 599 are in intensive care, or 32 more. Portugal has also reached a new peak here.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has already registered 8,080 deaths associated with Covid-19 and 496,552 cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and 110,388 cases are now active, 1,076 more than on Monday.

According to DGS data, 44 percent of new cases registered today are in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region.
