Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes a global, progressive and irreversible deterioration of various cognitive functions (memory, attention, concentration, language, thought, among others).

This deterioration has as its consequences changes in behaviour, personality and functional capacity of the person, making it difficult for them to carry out their daily activities.

The name of this disease is due to Alois Alzheimer, a German physician who first described the disease in 1907.

As the brain cells are reduced in size and number, neurofibrillar braids form inside them and senile plaques form in the outer space between them. This makes communication within the brain impossible and damages the existing connections between the brain cells. These eventually die and this translates into an inability to remember the information. Thus, as Alzheimer’s disease affects the various brain areas, certain functions or abilities are lost. When a person loses a capability, they are rarely able to retrieve or relearn it.

In neuropathological terms, Alzheimer’s disease is characterised by neuronal death in certain parts of the brain, with some causes still to be determined. The appearance of fibrillar braids and senile plaques makes it impossible for nerve cells to communicate, which causes changes in the person’s overall functioning.
