In the epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) it is noted that 502 people are hospitalised today with covid-19, the highest number since April 6, when 504 people were hospitalised.

There are 115 people in intensive care units, one less in the last 24 hours.

The Lisbon and Vale do Tejo area has 56.4 percent of the total of new infections, concentrating 509 new cases.

The two deaths in the last 24 hours occurred in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region and in the North region.

The data released by the DGS also show that there are over 292 active cases, totalling 32,071 and that 608 were reported as recovered in the last 24 hours, which increases the national total to 826,292 recovered.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, 17,086 people have died in Portugal and 875,449 cases of infection have been registered.

The number of contacts under surveillance by health authorities rose by 731, totalling 50,051.

The incidence of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in mainland Portugal continues to rise, standing today at 161.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, as well as in the entire territory, which is now 158.5, according to official data.

On Friday, the incidence of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in mainland Portugal was 138.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the value for the entire territory stood at 137.5.

According to the joint epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), the transmissibility index (Rt) decreased from 1.14 to 1.13 throughout the national territory and from 1.15 to 1.14 in mainland Portugal.

The transmissibility index and the 14-day incidence data are updated on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, 509 new infections were reported, with 337,737 cases and 7,255 dead so far.

The Northern region now has 203 new SARS-CoV-2 infections, totalling 345,029 cases of infection and 5,364 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In the Centre region, 45 more cases were registered, totalling 121,731 infections and 3,027 deaths.

In the Alentejo, 18 more cases were reported, totalling 30,903 infections and 972 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the Algarve region, today's bulletin reveals that 100 cases were registered, totalling 24,055 infections and 365 deaths.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira registered 10 cases, totalling 9,897 infections and 69 deaths due to covid-19 since March 2020.

The Azores now have 17 new cases, accounting for 6,097 cases and 34 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira publish their data daily, which may not coincide with the information published in the DGS bulletin.

Of the total number of fatalities, 8,969 were men and 8,117 women.

The greatest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.

Of the total deaths, 11,215 were over 80 years old, 3,646 were aged between 70 and 79 years old, and 1,539 were between 60 and 69 years old.
