Among the nominees, announced today, in the category for Best Compilation of Soundtrack for Visual Media, is also the soundtrack of the film "Eurovision Song Contest: The History of Fire Saga", which has the song "Amar pelos Dois", by Salvador Sobral.
Singer Maria Mendes is nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Arrangements, Instrumentals and Vocals, with the theme "Asas Closed" by Amália Rodrigues, who recorded on the album "Close to me", with John Beasley and metropole Orkest of the Netherlands, released in October 2019.
It was with this same song that Maria Mendes and John Beasley were nominated this year for the Latin Grammys, without having won the award in their category. "Close to me" is the Portuguese singer's third album, which has been in the Netherlands for more than a decade, and the first fully performed album in Portuguese.
In an interview with Lusa, when the album came out, Maria Mendes recalled that the idea of "taking fado and Portuguese folklore, and having them as a starting point for a more modern and conceptual musical creative concept", arose following an invitation to join the jazz day festivities in Rotterdam.
Among the 11 songs that make up the album are adaptations of some "lesser known" fados, such as "Asas Closed", by Amalia - nominated for the Grammys - and others "a little more obvious", such as "Foi Deus" and "All this is fado", by the same fado artist.
In addition to Maria Mendes and the trio that has been accompanying her for about ten years, the album has the participation of Metropole Orkest, dutch symphony jazz orchestra. The decision to include the orchestra came at the final moment of the musical adaptation and arrangements, which Maria Mendes shared with the album's producer, John Beasley, "one of the greatest producers and musical directors of international jazz".
For the 63rd Grammy Awards, American singer Beyoncé is the one with the most nominations, in nine categories, namely the Record of the Year and Best R&B Performance, with the song "Black Parade". "Black is king", which the singer released this year on the Disney + platform, is nominated for Best Musical Film.
With six nominations each, they follow British singer Dua Lipa, American rapper Roddy Ricch and American singer Taylor Swift. Jhené Aiko's Grammy award for Album of the Year is "Chilombo", the Black Pumas' eponymous album Everyday life, "Djesse vol. 3", by Jacob Collier, "Women in music Pt. III", by Haim, "Future Nostalgia" by Dua Lipa, and "Hollywood's Bleeding", by Post Malone.
For this edition, there are several nominations, notably by singer Harry Styles, in three categories with the album "Fine Line", the South Korean SBTS, nominated for Best Performance in Duo or Group, and the Strokes for Best Rock Album with "The New Abnormal".
In the categories of Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance dominate women, with Fiona Apple, Brittany Howard, Haim, grace potter, Phoebe Bridgers and big thief, led by Adrianne Lenker.
The Associated Press notes that the choices for the Grammys also reflect the spirit of the times, notably the "Black Lives Matter" movement that emerged this year in protest of the deaths of several African-American citizens, with the nomination of Beyoncé's "Black Parade," H.E.R.'s "I can't breathe," or Anderson's "Lockdown." Mr. Paak. Paul McCartney, who has accumulated 18 Grammys, is currently recording his 79th nomination for the awards, this time as artistic director of a special edition of the album Flaming Pie.
This year there will be nominations for posthumously, notably the musician John Prine, who died last April, and which is nominated in two categories with the theme "I Remember Everything", and the singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, who died in 2016, but whose last studio album, "Thanks for the Dance", nominated for Best Folk Album was released.
In the chapter of Lusophony, highlight the nomination of Bebel Gilberto for the Grammy for Best Music Album in the World with "Agora", and guitarist Chico Pinheiro for the Grammy award for Best Latin Jazz Album with "City of Dreams".
The 63rd Grammy Awards are scheduled for January 31 with Trevor Noah.
