According to the SREA, between January and July 2021, 223,490 passengers disembarked in the Azores, in maritime transport, while in the same period of 2020 there were only 127,759. There were over 95,731 passengers, equivalent to approximately 75%.
The month of July, whose data were updated today by the SREA, also registers significant growth, compared to previous months and the same period of the previous year.
July was the month in which the highest number of passengers landed in the Azores this year, 62,974 in total, 19,917 more than in June 2021 and 25,826 more than in July 2020.
The island of Pico is the one that has, so far, more passengers disembarked in 2021, with a total of 102,954, following the trend of previous years.
The number of passengers disembarked in maritime transport, between January and July 2021, in the Azores, is below the values registered in the same period of 2019, in which 296,775 passengers were accounted for (73,285).
However, in addition to the direct impact of the covid-19 pandemic on tourism, in 2020 and 2021 there was no Atlanticline summer operation, which usually connected all the islands of the Azores, with the exception of Corvo, between May and September, with larger ships.
Since 2020, there has been only maritime passenger transport between the islands of the Central group, with greater incidence on the so-called Triângulo islands (Faial, Pico and São Jorge), and between the islands of Flores and Corvo.
In total, from 2019 to 2020 there was a drop in disembarked passengers of about 46%, dropping from 562,993 to 301,062.
