According to the Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA), the earthquake was recorded at 04:11 local time (05:11 in Lisbon) and had an epicentre about 34 kilometres NNW (North-Northwest) of Cedros, on the island of Faial.

According to the information available so far, the earthquake was felt with maximum intensity IV on the Modified Mercalli scale, in the parish of Rosais (Municipality of Velas, Island of S.Jorge).

The quake was still felt with intensity III in the parish of Castelo Branco (municipality of Horta, island of Faial).
