Today's epidemiological bulletin records five more people hospitalised with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, with the total number of people hospitalised rising to 351, including 83 in intensive care units, where four more patients have entered.

The number of new cases of infection had not been this high since 24 February, when 1,480 infections were recorded.

Most of the new infections (928) were diagnosed in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, where the six deaths of people with Covid-19 also occurred.

Health authorities count 755 more active cases, a daily number more than eight times higher than on Tuesday, for a total of 26,428, while 589 people have been reported recovered, bringing the total to 817,092 since the first cases of infection.

The number of contacts on surveillance has increased by 82 in the past 24 hours and now stands at 32,287 people.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, 17,055 people with Covid-19 have died in Portugal and 860,395 cases of infection have been recorded.

The national transmissibility index (Rt) of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus stands at 1.12 and the incidence of infection cases per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 91.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 327,969 cases of infection and 7,233 deaths from Covid-19 have been recorded so far.

The North region now has 199 new SARS-CoV-2 infections, totalling 342,810 cases of infection and 5,360 deaths since the pandemic began.

In the Centre region, 85 more cases have been registered, bringing the total to 120,691 infections and 3,025 deaths.

In the Alentejo 30 more cases were reported, totalling 30,500 infections and 971 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In the Algarve region, today's bulletin reveals that 90 new cases have been registered, accumulating 22,779 infections and 364 deaths.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has recorded two new cases, bringing the total to 9,803 cases and 69 deaths with covid-19 since March 2020.

The Azores now has 16 new cases and accounts for 5,843 cases and 33 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira release their data daily, which may not coincide with the information released in the DGS bulletin.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 468,559 women and 391,437 men in Portugal, DGS data show, according to which there are 399 cases of unknown gender, which are under investigation as this information is not provided automatically.

Of the total number of fatalities, 8,956 were men and 8,099 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.

The pandemic caused at least 3,824,885 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 176.5 million cases of infection, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
