These numbers bring the total number of deaths to 601,011, while the number of people infected with the new coronavirus now stands at 21,575,820, including 8,639 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, cited by the Spanish news agency, Efe, there are also 295,951 patients under medical surveillance, while 20.6 million people have recovered from the disease.

Today's numbers, however, may be slightly higher - as is always the case on weekends, when the number of staff dedicated to data collection is low - and be updated on Monday and Tuesday.

The statistics reflect the strong progress of vaccination in the last three months: 46.3% of the 213 million Brazilians were fully vaccinated, while 70% received the first dose.

Thanks to vaccines, according to the Ministry of Health, the health situation has improved across the country and there are already cases, such as the central state of Goiás, which has not registered a single death in the last 48 hours.

The disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in several countries.
