According to the Monthly Employment and Unemployment Estimates for June, “the unemployment rate stood at 6.9 percent, 0.1 percent less than in the previous month, 0.3 percent more than three months before and 0.6 percent less than in June 2020”.

The labour underutilization rate was stood at 12.7 percent, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared to May, 0.2 percent compared to March and 3.0 points compared to June of last year.

In May, the unemployment rate stood at 7.0 percent, the same value as the previous month, 0.1 percentage points higher than three months earlier and 1.0 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

In that month, the labour underutilization rate stood at 12.8 percent, 0.1 percentage points lower than the previous month, 1.0 compared to three months before and 2.0 to May 2020.

INE estimates that, in May 2021, the active population has totalled 5,138,600 people, increasing 1.4 percent (69,000) compared to the previous month, 2.3 percent (114,600) compared to three months before (February of 2021) and 5.6 percent (274,500) compared to a year earlier.

Similar behaviour had the activity rate, estimated at 66.9 percent, which increased in relation to the three analyzed periods: 0.9, 1.4 and 3.5 percentage points, respectively.

For June, the estimate of the active population stood at 5,149,700 people, which corresponds to an increase of 0.2 percent (11,100) compared to the previous month, 2.2 percent (108,900) compared to three months before (March) and 3.8 percent (190,500) when compared to the same month of the previous year.

The activity rate showed an identical evolution, standing at 67.1 percent in June, which shows an increase of 0.2 percentage points when compared to May, 1.4 compared to March and 2.4 compared to June 2020.

In May, the employed population reached 4,777,000 people, having increased 1.3 percent (61,400) compared to the previous month, 2.1 percent(99,100 thousand) compared to three months before and 4.5 percent (203,700) in compared to the same period of the previous year.

The employment rate, estimated at 62.2 percent, was 0.8 percentage points higher than in the previous month, 1.3 in the three months before and 2.6 in the same month in the previous month.

In June, the employed population, which corresponded to 4,793,600 people, increased 0.3 percent (16,600) compared to the previous month, 1.9 percent (87,200) compared to the three months before and 4.5 percent (206,800) compared to a year earlier.

In that month, the employment rate stood at 62.4 percent, having increased by 0.2 percentage points compared to the previous month, 1.1 compared to March and 2.6 compared to June 2020.

In June, the youth unemployment rate (27.7 percent) increased 2.1 percentage points from the previous month, while the adult unemployment rate (5.4 percent) decreased by 0.3 percentage points.
