“The Portuguese military will cooperate with forces from other nations, in the Bechtel camp, a temporary accommodation where the operation is being carried out to support Afghan civilians evacuated from Kabul and who are awaiting the opportunity to be relocated to host countries”, says the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA), in a note.

According to the Armed Forces, the Civil-Military Cooperation detachment (CIMIC) will be part of the NATO task force, during an operation of up to 90 days.

In addition to collaborating with NATO, the Portuguese military will establish contact with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international organizations in the Bechtel camp, in order to identify needs and help Afghan refugees.

The EMGFA clarifies that the military detachment will depart from Air Base No. 6, in Montijo (Setúbal), at 7:00 am on Friday, in a C-130 aircraft.

The victory of the Taliban in Afghanistan triggered an operation by international forces that allowed the evacuation of more than 100,000 foreigners and Afghans from the Kabul airport.

With the Afghan capital controlled by the Taliban, the operation was marked by the desperation of thousands of Afghans wanting to flee the country and by attacks by the extremist group Islamic State, including a bomb attack that killed about 200 people.
