“If the law requires an environmental impact study, an environmental impact study is carried out. If the law doesn't require it, it's not done, it's as simple as this”, he clarified, when questioned by the councillor from the Left Block (BE), Sérgio Aires.
Sérgio Aires also questioned the municipal majority led by the independent Rui Moreira if, after the eventual approval of the subdivision request, it will be sent for public discussion, a question that was given exactly the same answer given previously by Pedro Baganha.
The councillor responsible for the Urbanism department reiterated that if the law requires it, it will be done.
The topic was also addressed by the CDU councillor, Ilda Figueiredo, who said that she knew, following a response to her request, that "the process is under analysis".
Due to the impact of the project for the Spanish chain, Ilda Figueiredo also defended that it would be useful to schedule, later on, a discussion on this “controversial” topic.
The Spanish chain's project for the former railway station has been contested since it was made public, even leading to a group of citizens asking for the municipal classification of the former Boavista railway station, after the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC) filed the national application. This request was also rejected.
The project has been challenged by the Movement for gardens in Boavista, that advocates for the creation of a green space in the area.
