Minister ‘concerned’ about theft of 50 police pistols

The Portuguese internal affairs minister said she was concerned about the theft of 50 pistols from the national police premises, but was waiting for the conclusions of the investigations before deciding if any changes needed to be made to the procedures.

“Naturally it is something that concerns me even though there is an inspection under way, disciplinary processes and also a criminal investigation. We need to wait for the conclusions”, of the public prosecutor, said Constança Urbano de Sousa in the police national premises on the sidelines of the delivery of 34 new police cars.
On Thursday, the internal affairs ministry said the police had suspended two officers and opened an inquiry into the storage of police weapons after 50 9mm Glocks were found to have gone missing.
The police discovered a police weapon in the possession of a drugs dealer with the police symbol on it which led them, to discover it was one of fifty that were unaccounted for. After all police officers in the country were able to prove they had their guns, the police looked into the possibility of a theft from their own stores.
