The report "Analysis of Forest Fires” released yesterday said that it welcomed the programme "Safe Town, Safe People" launched by the government as well as measures in managing fuel surrounding houses.
However, it said extensive work was needed to make communities "more resilient" and "apt" to defend themselves from the effects of fires.
This report is welcomed as it represents an in-depth study covering some 420 pages into the fires on 15th October 2017. Many of of the recommendations mirror those that were made by the same author into the Pedrograo Grande fires in June of the same year. As a result of all this a great deal has changed and the country is better prepared, but there is more to be done. Safe Communities Portugal has been involved in some of these changes based on recommendations we have made. One simple measure was the SCP -Portugal News collaboration in 2018 on land cleaning. The Safe Village Safe People program is a major step and we have translated this into 7 languages for government. I suggest that people view our pages available in English to see the developments are taking place. https://www.safecommunitiesportugal.com/forest-fires/ David Thomas President Safe Communties Portugal
