The captain of the port of Vila Real de Santo António told Lusa agency that the causes of the disappearance of the man in the waters of the river, at about 4 pm on Sunday, near the town of Foz de Odeleite, a river that flows into the Guadiana, are "still are being investigated ".
According to Rui Vasconcelos de Andrade, the warning was given by two other men who accompanied him "spending the day in the area" and "doing recreational fishing".
"What we do know is that one of them ended up in the water and the others gave the warning," he added, stressing that the authorities are investigating the circumstances in which the man entered the water and then disappeared.
The official said that the searches "were suspended at dusk" on Sunday and "resumed this morning, around 7:00 am".
