Following a proposal from Loulé Council to recognise a house located in Quinta do Lago as a “Municipal Interest Monument”, the Directorate-General for Heritage wants to classify the same building as a “Monument of National Interest”.
The municipal officials consider this building (a project by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura - one of the biggest names in Portuguese architecture), a “contemporary architectural heritage of the 20th century, in the category of civil architecture and housing”.
Also within the heritage policy, Loulé Council intends to recognise as a “Property of Municipal Interest” the Manor House of Quinta de Quarteira, better known as “Estalagem da Cegonha”.
According to Loulé council: “The emblematic set of buildings dating from the 15th century, which brings together several buildings that currently make up the Estalagem da Cegonha equestrian complex, in Vilamoura are "living testimonies" of the history of Loulé and the transformation and development of Portugal in the 15th century”.
"This proposal is very important for us and has as its main objective is the preservation of this heritage and the enhancement of its cultural and identity values”, says Loulé council in a statement.
Both proposals will now be submitted for discussion at the Loulé Municipal Assembly.
