“Associated with the approach and passage of the cold front,
periods of occasionally heavy rain or showers are expected, accompanied by
thunderstorms, more likely on the south coast and in the mountainous regions of
the island of Madeira, especially during the late afternoon and Tuesday night”,
reads the note.
The SRPC adds that, from late afternoon today and early
Wednesday, the wind will be “moderate from the southwest, temporarily strong
(30 to 40 kilometers per hour) with gusts of around 80 to 90 kilometres per hour”.
These conditions led the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and
the Atmosphere (IPMA) to place the mountainous regions and the south coast of Madeira
under an orange weather warning until 00:00 on Wednesday.
The City Council of Funchal informed that, following the
warnings issued by the IPMA, it decided to cancel all urban cleaning work
scheduled for this afternoon, “with the staff assigned to these functions being
redirected to support the cleaning of gutters and monitoring of the most
critical points of the city”.
