"An old school here becomes the space for the affirmation of security and territorial cohesion", said the minister, during the inauguration of the new GNR territorial post of Salvaterra de Magos, in the district of Santarém, considering it an example "of proximity of the police” to the population, especially“ in low-density territories”.
In his speech, in which he underlined the performance of GNR in the context of the pandemic of covid-19, Eduardo Cabrita stressed the answer given by the police, simultaneously, in their usual functions, highlighting “support for the most fragile in Portugal, such as abandoned elderly”. Through the “new Senior Census, which identified more than 40,000 elderly people in a situation of isolation” and who “have a close and friendly voice in the GNR to help them”.
The minister concluded: “Since the annual internal security report the country has the lowest levels of general and violent crime”, contributing to “the recognition of Portugal as one of the safest countries in the world”.
